Wehrle supplies leachate treatment plant to Tunisia |

Wehrle has received an order to provide a leachate treatment system including membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to Socobat in Tunisia. In Tunisia and North Africa there are numerous new landfill sites which have been developed in line with European standards. These sites receive a base sealing and a leachate retaining basin. The collected leachate is extremely highly loaded and presents a specific challenge due to different waste compositions compared to central European landfill leachate. Particularly, there are high demands on the membrane cleaning regime. At the new landfill leachate treatment facility in Sousse - engineered by Socobat, a Tunisian building contractor - the leachate from the landfill sites at Sousse, Monastir and Kairouan are treated together. The leachate is brought by tanker from Monastir and Kairouan to Sousse. The mixed leachate is highly loaded with solids, salts, and ammonia which have to be completely removed before discharging to the environment. Wehrle has received the order for the construction of the landfill leachate treatment plant. The system includes the Wehrle MBR-HS (BIOMEMBRAT®) process followed by reverse osmosis. On account of the worldwide references and the wide experience in the biological treatment of highly loaded wastewater, the customer decided in favour of Wehrle. The plant design, capable of meeting high process demands, reflects the advanced technology and sound reliability of Wehrle systems. Not only is the large daily capacity of 120 m³/d guaranteed, but also the recovery of varying contaminant compositions and salt concentrations. Concentrations of 70,000 mg/l COD, 5,450 mg /l NH4-N, 60,000 mg/l solids and 5,500 mg/l Cl are reduced by 98-100 %. Wehrle is responsible for designing the treatment plant, delivering all technical components, supervision of the installation works, commissioning and optimisation.
