Wehrle delivers Nanofiltration for Brine Recovery in the Sugar Industry

Wehrle has received its first order from the sugar industry - they will deliver a containerised Nanofiltration Unit for one of the biggest sugar factories in the Indian Ocean. The project is being undertaken in partnership with ProMinent Fluid Controls South Africa.

Nanofiltration will be used for the recovery of brine, an alkaline solution with high levels of sodium chloride. The brine is used in the sugar industry for the regeneration of the ion exchange resins with which the brown sugar molasses are decolourised. The used brine contains appoximately. 7.000 mg/l of COD (sugar colourants) and around 6 % NaCl, with pH at 11-13. With Nanofiltration, the organic compounds will be retained and discarded whereas the permeate containing the NaCl will be recycled.

The plant has been designed for a throughput of 70 m³/d and 85 % recovery. The commissioning on site is expected to take place in June.

The project is expected to be the first in a series of new projects to be carried out together with ProMinent South Africa in the wastewater treatment sector.
