Wehrle unveils new concept in landfill leachate treatment

In Galati, Romania, a new landfill site will be built by Mesogeos (www.mesogeos.com) according to European standards regarding the disposal of communal solid waste. This results in the need for efficient leachate treatment. The expected high leachate concentrations and the limit values for the treated water set very high requirements for the treatment system.

At the same time the leachate treatment system must be designed for variable quantities of liquid and surrounding temperatures of -20 to +40°C throughout the year.

To fulfil these challenging conditions, Wehrle has offered a combination of ammonium-stripping with a connected downstream multistage reverse osmosis system.

Wehrle has been awarded the contact because of their especially user friendly and flexible approach to developing design concepts. The process equipment has been supplied in a container arrangement. Ammonia stripping, chemicals and reverse osmosis units are accommodated in a heated container.

In the reverse osmosis unit, organic-resistant spiral wound membrane modules are used which provide an optimum solution, taking into account membrane replacement costs and operational safety, as well as the necessary cleaning frequency.

Leachate will be treated by Wehrle’s system to produce a product water suitable for use in agriculture or for direct introduction into local receiving waters.

Wehrle are at the forefront of new concept and solution development. They have a long-standing experience of more than 25 years in the area of leachate purification with numerous worldwide leachate treatment references.
