The Slovenian operating company Snaga d.o.o. organised the inauguration of the leachate treatment plant for the Barje landfill site, which took place in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, on 6 July 2010. More than 100 guests, including politicians and industrialists, attended the inauguration.
In presence of the mayor of Ljubljana as well as representatives of the national government of Slovenia, Mr. Janko Kramžar, manager of Snaga, started up the leachate treatment plant after only a one and a half-year construction time. The local partner of Wehrle, RIKO industrijski d.o.o., gained the order for the construction of the plant at the end of 2008 after an EU-wide tender.
The plant concept includes a membrane bioreactor (MBR) with external membranes. For the elimination of the oxidised nitrogen compounds a pre-denitrification step is included. Other components include a feed supply basin, an activated carbon adsorption for tertiary treatment as well as an ion exchanger for the reduction of boron concentration.
Wehrle designed and built the bioreactors, the ultrafiltration system and the activated carbon step. Furthermore, Wehrle will provide services during the first test-operating year, which will demonstrate the proper operation of the plant.
The plant operator decided to use the membrane bioreactor with pre-denitrification because of pilot tests on-site as well as having visited several existing reference plants, all having fulfilled the discharge requirements for leachate for many years now.
