New Reverse Osmosis Unit for existing Leachate Treatment Plant in Málaga, Spain

In July 2009 the Spanish company LIMASA entrusted Wehrle with the extension of an existing leachate treatment plant. The turn-key project comprises engineering, construction and commissioning of a reverse osmosis unit. This tertiary treatment is applied to improve the effluent quality of the treated wastewater significantly, especially with respect to conductivity and chloride concentration.

At present, LIMASA is operating a BIOMEMBRAT® Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) plant to treat the leachate that originates from a landfill site. However, the existing plant is not designed to reduce conductivity to less than 5.000 µS/cm. To comply with this very strict requirement it was necessary to install the subsequent reverse osmosis unit to reduce the conductivity.

The plant capacity is about 18000 m³ leachate per year. The new plant will be commissioned early in 2010.
