Third Order from Cadbury - MBR Plant in Romania |

Cadbury, a worldwide manufacturer of confectionary, has given Wehrle a third order for an additional wastewater treatment plant. Following the plants in Valladolid (Spain) and Novgorod (Russia) the production plant in Bucharest (Romania) will also receive a waste water treatment plant from Wehrle. Wehrle is contracted to provide planning services, delivery, assembly and commissioning of the plant. The commissioning will be at the end of 2009. A specific feature of the location in Bucharest is its central situation. The chocolate and candy company will only be allowed to keep this central location, if they clean their wastewater as requested from a CSB concentration of 8,000 mg/l to a CSB concentration of 500 mg/l before the end of 2009, to allow continued discharge to the municipal sewer. Not only was the cleaning criteria decisive for the selection of proven Wehrle MBR technology, but also the extremely compact construction volume of the membrane bioreactor plant due to lack of available space on site. The considerably diminished reactor volume of the high performance biological system and the arrangement of the ultra-filtration membranes as well as the other plant components in a compact container persuaded the client to once again employ Wehrle's expertise. Also the low noise disturbance released from the specially designed compressors and the low odour nuisance due to the extensively closed plant were important criteria which were considered. The flow rate amounts to 50 m³/d. The wastewater is pre-treated mechanically in a drum filter, before it is mixed in a balance tank and neutralised as required. Afterwards the suspended solids are reduced using dissolved air flotation before the wastewater flows into the bioreactor. Treated water is discharged to the local sewer. Author: Cornelia Timm.
