Landfill leachate can be treated using Wehrle MBR or SBR technology.
Landfill leachate poses specific challenges for MBR systems; typically it has high concentrations of COD, ammonia and chloride. This requires a biological treatment system that extensively nitrifies, whilst the membrane system must withstand the corrosive chloride-rich influent.
Both the Wehrle MBR-HS and Wehrle MBR-LS processes are particularly suitable for the treatment of landfill leachate for subsequent treatment by the local wastewater treatment facility.
Where direct discharge to a local watercourse is necessary, the Wehrle MBR-DD-Process may be more appropriate.
Low Energy Crossflow operation on larger MBR leachate treatment systems can reduce significantly the operating cost of Wehrle process solutions.
Should BOD and nitrogen removal be sufficient and the disposal requirements not too high, then Wehrle SBR technology can be effectively used in landfill leachate treatment. Reduced investment and operating costs, alongside an ability to reuse existing tanks, make the SBR process extremely viable under certain site-specific conditions.
